EXP Podcast #224: A New Hope for Star Wars

8bit Star Wars poster via Waxing Nostalgic
We thought Lucas Arts and Star Wars 1313 was our last hope for a great Star Wars game. But no. There is another. With the recent announcement that Disney will be handing over the video game licenses for Star Wars to EA, the internet has been abuzz with mixed feelings. Some are eager to see what Visceral or BioWare can do with the franchise. Others are a bit more pessimistic. This week on the podcast, Scott and I step into the proverbial "shockboxing ring" and discuss our own thoughts on the Force, old Lucas Arts games, Boba Fett, and the future of the Skywalker clan.

As always, we would love to hear your thoughts on the future of the Star Wars franchise. I also encourage you to let us know what Star Wars games were your favorite, and least favorite, and what titles you would like to see revived. Let us know in the comments below!

  1. Great show as always! For the record, you could play as the Jedi Council Keldor member in Jedi Power Battles... not great but fun all the same.

  2. Oh man, this is a tough choice.

Most Favorite: It's a toss-up between Rogue Squadron and TIE Fighter. Both so much fun!

Least Favorite: Battlefront. I've yet to see a game that was fun when AI players fill out all the empty slots, and this was no exception. And the overall experience was just a poor man's Battlefield, and that came out ages before!

  3. Good show as usual, guys. But... for shame. How come none of you brought up the Jedi Knight series?

It was the first Star Wars that really blew my mind as a youngun', and it's first person light sabering has not been replicated for some strange reason. The use of powers and particularly the boss battles were absolutely amazing, and I never understood why Lucas Arts never revisited that concept. 3rd person "shooters" are all fine and dandy, but those 1st person battles felt a hundred times deeper.

Also, I believe it was the first game that had a light side / dark side moral slider, and it effectively determined what powers you had available. Again, this might be a forgotten gem - because for my money, it was just as much of a gem as KOTOR and KOTOR 2.

  4. Poor Dash Rendar, never the rapscallion Han was or hero Luke was. Leia just never swooned over his boxy shoulders and low res facial features.

Shadows of the Empire does hold a special place in my heart though as also being one of the only games I could play on the N64 in the early days of that generation.

  5. Jedi Power Battles...wow, that's a blast from the past. I think I remember playing the PSX version, then again it could just be a hazy, jaggy memory. :)

  6. Like you, I'm a huge fan of Rogue Squadron. Any game where I can lock s-foils at will is an instant hit. I played a bunch of the GameCube version as well. The battle over Endor was especially memorable.

I'm also in your camp when it comes to Battlefield; serviceable but done better (and earlier) by other shooters.

  7. I'm ashamed to admin it, but I never played the Jedi Knight games...I know, I know: I've caused a great disturbance in the force, etc.

I feel like Jedi Knight is often overlooked, but that its advocates are quite devoted. Maybe someday!
