EXP Podcast #247: The Heroes We Hate

We have plenty of heroes in the video game world, but how many of them are likeable? That's the question the Gameological Society staff recently discussed.     I'd like to defend Max Payne for a bit here :)

    I've only ever played the first Max Payne game, but in that game I don't remember Max as bad person as such. He's an angry person, filled with rightful hatred against the people who slaughtered his wife and child. This loss is what drives him to do what he does, which (while wrong) is an understandable course of action to take in his situation. I think what I'm trying to say is that while I don't like the things Max Payne is doing, I understand where he's coming from and thus sympathize with him.

    Considering Desmond Miles' only crime is being underdeveloped, I think Assassin's Creed has a far more despicable protagonist in Connor Kenway. For starters, he's whiny, bullheaded, and argumentative. Even worse, he has no clear ambition or purpose beyond anything tantamount to teenage angst. I'm thrilled they're moving on instead of dragging him out across another trilogy.

    I haven't actually played AC 3, but being stuck coming from Italian playboy Ezio and swashbuckling privateer Edward Kenway probably leaves him quite lacking.
