EXP Podcast #253: Meet the PS4

Santa came early to the Experience Points household and he brought a shiny new PlayStation 4 with him! This week, we dip a toe into the next generation and report back with some early impressions of the new system's controller, operating system, and social features. I don't know if you heard, but this thing also plays games! With this in mind, we share some thoughts on a few of the early releases. As always, feel free to jump into the comments with your thoughts!

  1. I typically count the PC as my primary gaming platform, which makes the decision-making process regarding new consoles all the more interesting. For me, the PS4 is an automatic choice whereas the Xbox One is almost redundant.

My reasoning? It all boils down to which console is likely to have the more "sticky" exclusives. For example, many of the Xbox 360's high profile exclusives eventually made their way to the PC: Mass Effect, Alan Wake, Fable III, Mark of the Ninja, Gears of War, etc. PS3 exclusives, not so much: Uncharted, The Last of Us, Infamous, Journey, Flower, LittleBigPlanet, Demon's Souls, God of War, Heavy Rain, etc.

It looks as if that trend's going to continue into the next generation (ie, Titanfall coming to Xbox One and PC but not PS4), so there's very little incentive for me to buy an Xbox One. True, there will probably a few Xbox One exclusives that won't make it to the PC but may otherwise interest me, but it all depends on what sort of numbers we're talking about.

Of course, if money were no object or if I was heavily into multiplayer gaming and all my friends had an Xbox One, then I'd the console to my collection. But I don't do a whole lot of multiplayer gaming and thus have no incentive to own whatever console my friends have.

I'd be genuinely interested to hear from other hardcore PC gamers, who typically buy just one other console, if they're leaning more towards the Xbox One or the PS4.

  2. I'm in almost the exact same position. Other than Gears, Halo, and Forza (only two of which I care about), almost all the one-time Xbox exclusives I wanted to play went to PC or Sony eventually.

The other thing that makes the Xbox less attractive is that I am not (nor will I likely ever be) a cable or satellite subscriber. All the media stuff just isn't a factor at all in my decision making process.
